Chapter Ten

Bess stomped her foot into the grass and looked the famous pilot right in the eye. “You can’t go around the world,” Bess said. “Something bad will happen if you do.”

“Rrrrribbbbet,” Froggenstein said, agreeing.

Ms. Earhart smiled. Her smile seemed especially bright against her dirty face. “I know you mean well, but I’ll tell you exactly what I tell everyone else. Never interrupt someone doing something you said couldn’t be done.”

“It’s not that it can’t be done…” Bess replied.

“I know,” Ms. Earhart said. “Because I’m going to work up to it. I’ll need a different plane. One that can hold more fuel…”

“You’re going to go missing if you try.” Bess’s voice cracked when she said that. “We know that.”

“Stop trying to change history,” Hazel whispered to her sister.

“Said the girl who left her notebook somewhere in the past,” Bess yelled back.

Hazel checked her back pocket again. The notebook was still there, thank goodness. Her watch slipped along her wrist and she checked the time. It was already past 3:00. A couple of cows mooed off in the distance.

Ms. Earhart stopped and put her hands on her hips. “What are you girls talking about?”

“We’re from the future…” Bess said.

“No, we’re not,” Hazel replied, interrupting Bess. “She’s six, so she has a huge imagination. Future…” Hazel laughed loudly, so Amelia Earhart would know that was funny.

Ms. Earhart touched Bess’s red cape. She looked at her bright red, white, and blue superhero outfit. “Is this how people dress in the future?”

“Not everyone,” Bess said. “But, I don’t like to dress like everyone.”

Ms. Earhart smoothed down her puffy-at-the-top, tan pants. “I completely understand. Not everyone dresses like me either. Most women wear dresses all the time.”

“I like your pants,” Bess said. “And, it’s fun wearing your helmet. And, I think you’re wonderful. That’s why you have to believe me. You go on a trip around the world and you go missing.”

Ms. Earhart let go of Bess’s cape and gave her a quick hug. “Thank you for that information. I’ll have to decide to go or not to go when the time comes. But there was something I forgot to tell you girls about goals when I was talking about them earlier. When you make one, you have to decide whether or not the goal is worth the risks involved. If it is, then you stop worrying.”

She tightened the tube with the wrench then pointed to her toolbox. “Can you hand me a screwdriver?”

Hazel searched through the dirty toolbox and pulled out a screwdriver using only the tips of her fingers. It looked filthy, and felt greasy, but she handed it to the famous pilot.

Ms. Earhart tightened a screw near the base of the tube. Then, she turned to Hazel and Bess, motioning with her screwdriver. “But, I’ve always found that the most effective way to do it, is to do it.”

Hazel took a deep breath. She was relieved that her little sister probably hadn’t changed history because they weren’t supposed to change history, but a small part of her was actually hoping Bess would’ve been able to change it.
